Millions of people in large urban cities are taking advantage of car sharing. Owning a car in most cities isn’t very practical for many consumers, and they’re turning to car-sharing platforms as a means of financial savings, more efficient vehicle utilization, and personal conveniences. Here’s what you need to know about the future of car sharing.

Tremendous environmental benefits are being realized in these cities as the number of automobiles on the road reduces due to car sharing.

The United Nations predicts that at least 2.5 billion more people will be living in cities across the world by 2050. A study by ABI Research also found that the ultimate form of transportation in the car-sharing economy will be robotic service due to its convenience, affordability, and availability.

As such, 400 million people are projected to rely on Robotic Car Sharing by 2030. There’s no doubt car sharing has become part of the sustainability concepts of urban mobility today—and no doubt that its future is strong.

What is Car Sharing?

Despite its growing popularity, many people still have no idea that car-sharing has many use cases. The general population understands how traditional car-sharing works: an individual uses their own car to get rides from point A to B, as with Uber and Lyft.

Car sharing can also be a type of car rental service that allows users to rent cars parked in a network of convenient locations in the city for a few hours and only pay for their usage. You’re given access to a vehicle at any hour and return it to specific locations around the city once done with your trip.

Members don’t have the expense of owning and maintaining the vehicle but are billed based on the distance traveled and the time used.

Car Manufacturers and Car Sharing Technology

Technological advances, increased smartphone penetration, environmental concerns, and changes in consumer attitudes towards car ownership in the last several years have driven the changes in the automotive industry.

Car manufacturers were among the first industries to notice these changes, follow the trends, and enter the car-sharing market.

Transportation services giant Penske Corp jumped into the car-sharing business in 2019, giving consumers access to a fleet of Volkswagen Jetta SE vehicles at convenient locations within Washington D.C. Customers can rent their preferred vehicle per minute, hour, or day through the Penske Dash app.

Audi on Demand

Audi on Demand is another premium mobility service, boasting a wide range of the Audi brand vehicles, from the Audi A1 Sportback to the 7-seater Audi Q7.

Already, there are many Audi car owners using their vehicles to participate in car-sharing, and those individuals may choose to buy an Audi vehicle used and then purchase an extended car warranty from a company like Olive. Audi took this information and spearheaded its own program.

They launched the car-sharing service in 2016 allowing users to choose their preferred Audi vehicle on a per-day basis, up to 28 days at any given time.

Users can match specific Audi vehicles to their unique driving needs with convenience and ease. Audi’s mobility service is currently available in Heilbronn, Tokyo, Singapore, Hong Kong, Beijing, Liverpool, Birmingham, Barcelona, Glasgow, Munich, Manchester, and Newcastle. The automaker is still expanding to more cities in Europe.

Subscription Models in Car Sharing

Car manufacturers are testing new business models to stay ahead of new leading mobility solutions. Some choose to partner with other car-sharing services so they don’t have to take on the burden of operating the entire service. Car companies are also offering their cars using the subscription model.

For example, in 2018, Audi launched the Audi Select, a monthly vehicle subscription service that gives users access to certain 5 Audi models.

They are also given two complimentary days of Silver car rentals for their convenience when they travel. Subscribers don’t have to worry about roadside assistance costs, Insurance, maintenance costs, or mileage as they are all included in the subscription.

VW Group (Porsche Passport), Volvo (Care by Volvo), BMW (Access by BMW), Jaguar Land Rover (Carpe), and Mercedes-Benz (Collection) offer similar services for a set monthly price.

Such models of car sharing allow customers to enjoy convenience and flexibility without long-term commitment as needed by the current society.

The future of Car Sharing

Technological advancement is set to further empower the car-sharing industry. With 400 million people projected to rely on robotic car sharing by 2030, car sharing is only bound to get better.

In a study conducted by IBM, 39% of consumers preferred a car-sharing model whereas 36% would consider on-demand ride-sharing. The study further found that 42 percent of consumers would choose alternative modes of car ownership like monthly subscription pricing.

These findings show that more people, and especially millennials are becoming open to sharing rides with others as opposed to personal vehicle ownership.

Consumers should expect to see car-sharing integrate with electric and autonomous vehicles going forward. It’s even interesting to note that power companies are already gaining interest in the car-sharing trend.

A good example is Polish TAURON which launched an electric car-sharing service in 2018. Innogy, the German energy company, also launched an electric car-sharing service in Warsaw with 500 BMW i3 vehicles in 2019.

China first reported it as a “cluster of cases of pneumonia.â€� But, soon determined that it was caused by a new coronavirus. And, because of the fact that the world is a global village — the virus has spread around the world and continues to spread like wildfire.

The World Health Organization has stated, in conjunction with experienced medical personal and researchers, based on China’s experience that one of the only ways to prevent the virus’s person-to-person transmission is social isolation or social distancing.

Therefore, more than 50% of the world’s population is under some form of a lockdown or stay at home order.

We likely cannot imagine the far reaches of what COVID is doing to the global economy.

The world has moved into a recession that is predicted to be worse than the 1929 Great Recession. The World Economic Forum expects over 4 million people in the USA to file for unemployment benefits by the time this is over.

All non-essential businesses have been closed in most countries across the globe, and people have either been sent home or furloughed. And, all companies that have been able to pivot the processes and operations online have done so. Even with the reopening — slow in some places — and not slow enough in others — we are in trouble.

It is remarkable at this time in history that so many employees in companies — who have been sent home — are fortunate enough to be able to work remotely and at least keep business operations running.

Kimberly Amadeo noted in her article titled, “How does the 2020 stock market crash compare with others,� that the US 2020 stock market crash began on 9 March 2020, where the Dow Jones Industrial Average (DJIA) lost the most point in living history.

And, then it dropped again on 12 March 2020 and 16 March 2020, leaving it at an all-time low of 20.3% less than its 12 February 2020 high. Here we are in July — up and down.

Stock Market

The reason for these drops in the stock market is that there was, and continues to be, global panic about the rampant spread of the coronavirus and its devastating effects on the world’s population.

To date, there have been 11.5 million active infections — with more than 535,759 deaths. The infection and mortality rate is more deadly than the annual seasonal influenza that kills circa 0.01% of the global population annually.

The Stress

The emotional stress on the global population is being documented. The journal article published in the Brain, Behavior, and Immunity journal, titled “The emotional impact of COVID-19: From medical staff to common people,� notes the following:

“Infectious disease outbreaks such as COVID-19, as well as other public health events, can cause emotional distress and anxiety.�

The author, Nicola Montemurro, goes on to state that these feelings of distress and anxiety can occur in people who are not high-risk.

She also highlights the fact that “previous research has revealed a profound and wide spectrum of psychological impact that outbreaks can inflict on people.�

And, new “psychiatric symptoms in people without mental illness can occur or aggravate the condition of those with pre-existing mental illness.�

Thus, while the details of how to take care of yourself in these stressful and anxious times are not relevant to this discussion, it is essential to implement self-care measures to ensure that you survive these challenging global conditions.

The Fourth Industrial Revolution: Looking towards the future

The question that begs is, what does the Fourth Industrial Revolution (4IR or Industry 4.0) have to do with COVID-19 and surviving the economic, physical, and mental impact of the world we currently live?

This question is valid and deserves a considered answer.

Klaus Schwab, the founder, and chief executive officer of the World Economic Forum coined the phrase “The Fourth Industrial Revolution� in 2016. And, he had the following to say:

“We stand on the brink of a technological revolution that will fundamentally alter the way we live, work, and relate to one another.�

Some of these technologies impacted by 4IR include Artificial Intelligence and machine learning, the Internet of Things (IoT), WIFI and networking, robotics, and autonomous vehicles.

Four years later, these technologies have indeed happened. However, the reason for the impact of this revolution is not technology-driven, but think — all this tech has offered a solution to people in lockdown.

We can communicate with family members and friends, seek medical help via apps like Zoom and Skype, and work remotely because of the high tech that allows us to link to work colleagues and clients across the globe.

Managing customer relationships

The good news is that within every crisis there is an opportunity. Albert Einstein acknowledged this with the following statement:

“In the midst of every crisis, lies great opportunity.�

While acknowledging the stresses of the current global pandemic, it’s equally important to find opportunities in the midst of the crisis.

As the quotation highlighted above by Albert Einstein states, “in the middle of every crisis, lies an opportunity.� Thus, let’s start this discussion by defining the global crisis caused by the new coronavirus, COVID-19, so that we can look forward to finding the opportunity in the crisis.

Crisis versus opportunity: Setting the Scene

It is generally accepted that the novel coronavirus, COVID-19, was first seen in Wuhan, China, during the last days of 2019. This virus is a zoonotic virus. In other words, it was first seen in an animal like a bat, and it consequently jumped from an animal host to a human host. Once in its human host, COVID-19 mutated so that it could spread via person-to-person transmission.

As an aside, there are instances where it seems as though the virus has jumped back to an animal host in the form of pet dogs and cats. However, it is believed that this occurred because the pet’s owner was infected with the virus. And, this scenario is really nothing to worry about.

Four months later, since the first cases observed as a consequence of human-to-human transmission, the virus has swept across the globe, causing untold health and economic damage in its wake. Current worldwide statistics as of 10 May 2020, (from gisanddata.maps) show that there are over 10 million people infected with this virus and just over 503, 500 deaths. Unfortunately, these numbers seem to be increasing rapidly without an end in sight.

One of the many challenges facing the world’s governments is the fact that no one really knows how this virus behaves.

There has never been a viral outbreak of such magnitude before. Thus, the world’s scientists, medical experts, and governments are in new territory, determining what works and what doesn’t work as each country moves through the peaks and troughs of this pandemic.

There are, however, a few behaviors that the world’s scientists and medical experts have observed. The most important being that because this virus is spread via droplet infection from person to person, the best way of controlling and eradicating it is through social distancing or social isolation. In simple terms, people need to stay away from one another. Therefore, the world’s governments have issued varying degrees of lockdown or stay-at-home orders.

What this means is that the global economy has been paused while we wait for the virus to burn itself out.

Secondly, this virus is highly contagious and causes a respiratory illness similar to pneumonia, resulting in the death of people who fall in the high-risk category.

Thirdly, people can be asymptomatic carriers. In other words, they are infected with the virus but have no symptoms, so they spread the virus to other people without knowing they are infected.

Consequently, this pandemic has had and continues to have a negative impact on a macro-economic and microeconomic level.

It has also affected people’s mental, emotional, and physical health.

Governor Cuomo, governor of New York State, USA, highlighted the quintessential issue with the coronavirus pandemic in his conversation with Howard Stern on 13 April 2020. He stated that not only are we fighting a virus, “but we’re also fighting emotions on an individual level, on a collective level. People are frightened, they’re anxious, they’re stressed.” This virus is unmatched. People are trapped at home, they are not getting a salary, and they are afraid to touch another person because no one knows who is and isn’t infected with the virus.

As stated above, the economic impact across the globe has been devastating. The US jobs report released on Friday 8 May 2020 showed that the US has hit a depression-era unemployment rate.

Additionally, the npr.org website stated that 26 million people in the US have lost their jobs since early March 2020. The fundamental difference between the US, EU, and the UK is that the EU and the UK governments are paying a percentage of their workers’ salaries and their jobs will be available once the respective country’s economies start up again.

Finding the opportunity amidst the crisis

Therefore, the questions that must be asked and answered are what is the new normal and how do you utilize the “new normal� to earn an income? In summary, the biggest part of this answer is to find the opportunity in the crisis.

Most of this discussion up till this point has been about the crisis caused by the global pandemic. And, while the socioeconomic devastation must not be underestimated, the question that begs is, how do people find the opportunity within the crisis.

The first step in finding the opportunity within the crisis is to put measures into place to survive the crisis. The next step is to position yourself for economic sustainability (openminds.com — opportunity in adversity).

Following the government’s stay-at-home orders to the letter — practicing extreme social-distancing measures.
