Here’s What You Need to Know About the Future of Car Sharing

car sharing

Millions of people in large urban cities are taking advantage of car sharing. Owning a car in most cities isn’t very practical for many consumers, and they’re turning to car-sharing platforms as a means of financial savings, more efficient vehicle utilization, and personal conveniences. Here’s what you need to know about the future of car sharing.

Tremendous environmental benefits are being realized in these cities as the number of automobiles on the road reduces due to car sharing.

The United Nations predicts that at least 2.5 billion more people will be living in cities across the world by 2050. A study by ABI Research also found that the ultimate form of transportation in the car-sharing economy will be robotic service due to its convenience, affordability, and availability.

As such, 400 million people are projected to rely on Robotic Car Sharing by 2030. There’s no doubt car sharing has become part of the sustainability concepts of urban mobility today—and no doubt that its future is strong.

What is Car Sharing?

Despite its growing popularity, many people still have no idea that car-sharing has many use cases. The general population understands how traditional car-sharing works: an individual uses their own car to get rides from point A to B, as with Uber and Lyft.

Car sharing can also be a type of car rental service that allows users to rent cars parked in a network of convenient locations in the city for a few hours and only pay for their usage. You’re given access to a vehicle at any hour and return it to specific locations around the city once done with your trip.

Members don’t have the expense of owning and maintaining the vehicle but are billed based on the distance traveled and the time used.

Car Manufacturers and Car Sharing Technology

Technological advances, increased smartphone penetration, environmental concerns, and changes in consumer attitudes towards car ownership in the last several years have driven the changes in the automotive industry.

Car manufacturers were among the first industries to notice these changes, follow the trends, and enter the car-sharing market.

Transportation services giant Penske Corp jumped into the car-sharing business in 2019, giving consumers access to a fleet of Volkswagen Jetta SE vehicles at convenient locations within Washington D.C. Customers can rent their preferred vehicle per minute, hour, or day through the Penske Dash app.

Audi on Demand

Audi on Demand is another premium mobility service, boasting a wide range of the Audi brand vehicles, from the Audi A1 Sportback to the 7-seater Audi Q7.

Already, there are many Audi car owners using their vehicles to participate in car-sharing, and those individuals may choose to buy an Audi vehicle used and then purchase an extended car warranty from a company like Olive. Audi took this information and spearheaded its own program.

They launched the car-sharing service in 2016 allowing users to choose their preferred Audi vehicle on a per-day basis, up to 28 days at any given time.

Users can match specific Audi vehicles to their unique driving needs with convenience and ease. Audi’s mobility service is currently available in Heilbronn, Tokyo, Singapore, Hong Kong, Beijing, Liverpool, Birmingham, Barcelona, Glasgow, Munich, Manchester, and Newcastle. The automaker is still expanding to more cities in Europe.

Subscription Models in Car Sharing

Car manufacturers are testing new business models to stay ahead of new leading mobility solutions. Some choose to partner with other car-sharing services so they don’t have to take on the burden of operating the entire service. Car companies are also offering their cars using the subscription model.

For example, in 2018, Audi launched the Audi Select, a monthly vehicle subscription service that gives users access to certain 5 Audi models.

They are also given two complimentary days of Silver car rentals for their convenience when they travel. Subscribers don’t have to worry about roadside assistance costs, Insurance, maintenance costs, or mileage as they are all included in the subscription.

VW Group (Porsche Passport), Volvo (Care by Volvo), BMW (Access by BMW), Jaguar Land Rover (Carpe), and Mercedes-Benz (Collection) offer similar services for a set monthly price.

Such models of car sharing allow customers to enjoy convenience and flexibility without long-term commitment as needed by the current society.

The future of Car Sharing

Technological advancement is set to further empower the car-sharing industry. With 400 million people projected to rely on robotic car sharing by 2030, car sharing is only bound to get better.

In a study conducted by IBM, 39% of consumers preferred a car-sharing model whereas 36% would consider on-demand ride-sharing. The study further found that 42 percent of consumers would choose alternative modes of car ownership like monthly subscription pricing.

These findings show that more people, and especially millennials are becoming open to sharing rides with others as opposed to personal vehicle ownership.

Consumers should expect to see car-sharing integrate with electric and autonomous vehicles going forward. It’s even interesting to note that power companies are already gaining interest in the car-sharing trend.

A good example is Polish TAURON which launched an electric car-sharing service in 2018. Innogy, the German energy company, also launched an electric car-sharing service in Warsaw with 500 BMW i3 vehicles in 2019.

Customer Relationships: The Benefits of Using CRM Software for Startups

Are you in the process of bootstrapping a startup? Or, are you perhaps down the business growth and development road heading towards a mature SME? Are you using CRM software to manage your customers? What is Customer Relationship Management software? Here is: customer relationships — the benefits of using CRM software for startups.

At the outset of the article, it’s essential to note that the world as we know it will never be the same again. Hence, if customer relationships were meaningful before 2020, they are now critical.

“There is only one boss. The customer – and he can fire everybody in the company from the chairman on down, simply by spending his money somewhere else.â€ – Sam Walton

By way of answering the “why asked above, let’s take a brief look at the current global economic, health, and social circumstances.

The world as we know it: Setting the scene

News of the novel coronavirus, COVID-19, broke towards the end of 2019 when China alerted the World Health Organization to the fact that it was dealing with a rapidly spreading viral infection on the unknown origin.

China first reported it as a “cluster of cases of pneumonia.â€ But, soon determined that it was caused by a new coronavirus. And, because of the fact that the world is a global village — the virus has spread around the world and continues to spread like wildfire.

The World Health Organization has stated, in conjunction with experienced medical personal and researchers, based on China’s experience that one of the only ways to prevent the virus’s person-to-person transmission is social isolation or social distancing.

Therefore, more than 50% of the world’s population is under some form of a lockdown or stay at home order.

We likely cannot imagine the far reaches of what COVID is doing to the global economy.

The world has moved into a recession that is predicted to be worse than the 1929 Great Recession. The World Economic Forum expects over 4 million people in the USA to file for unemployment benefits by the time this is over.

All non-essential businesses have been closed in most countries across the globe, and people have either been sent home or furloughed. And, all companies that have been able to pivot the processes and operations online have done so. Even with the reopening — slow in some places — and not slow enough in others — we are in trouble.

It is remarkable at this time in history that so many employees in companies — who have been sent home — are fortunate enough to be able to work remotely and at least keep business operations running.

Kimberly Amadeo noted in her article titled, “How does the 2020 stock market crash compare with others, that the US 2020 stock market crash began on 9 March 2020, where the Dow Jones Industrial Average (DJIA) lost the most point in living history.

And, then it dropped again on 12 March 2020 and 16 March 2020, leaving it at an all-time low of 20.3% less than its 12 February 2020 high. Here we are in July — up and down.

Stock Market

The reason for these drops in the stock market is that there was, and continues to be, global panic about the rampant spread of the coronavirus and its devastating effects on the world’s population.

To date, there have been 11.5 million active infections — with more than 535,759 deaths. The infection and mortality rate is more deadly than the annual seasonal influenza that kills circa 0.01% of the global population annually.

The Stress

The emotional stress on the global population is being documented. The journal article published in the Brain, Behavior, and Immunity journal, titled “The emotional impact of COVID-19: From medical staff to common people, notes the following:

“Infectious disease outbreaks such as COVID-19, as well as other public health events, can cause emotional distress and anxiety.

The author, Nicola Montemurro, goes on to state that these feelings of distress and anxiety can occur in people who are not high-risk.

She also highlights the fact that “previous research has revealed a profound and wide spectrum of psychological impact that outbreaks can inflict on people.

And, new “psychiatric symptoms in people without mental illness can occur or aggravate the condition of those with pre-existing mental illness.

Thus, while the details of how to take care of yourself in these stressful and anxious times are not relevant to this discussion, it is essential to implement self-care measures to ensure that you survive these challenging global conditions.

The Fourth Industrial Revolution: Looking towards the future

The question that begs is, what does the Fourth Industrial Revolution (4IR or Industry 4.0) have to do with COVID-19 and surviving the economic, physical, and mental impact of the world we currently live?

This question is valid and deserves a considered answer.

Klaus Schwab, the founder, and chief executive officer of the World Economic Forum coined the phrase “The Fourth Industrial Revolution in 2016. And, he had the following to say:

“We stand on the brink of a technological revolution that will fundamentally alter the way we live, work, and relate to one another.

Some of these technologies impacted by 4IR include Artificial Intelligence and machine learning, the Internet of Things (IoT), WIFI and networking, robotics, and autonomous vehicles.

Four years later, these technologies have indeed happened. However, the reason for the impact of this revolution is not technology-driven, but think — all this tech has offered a solution to people in lockdown.

We can communicate with family members and friends, seek medical help via apps like Zoom and Skype, and work remotely because of the high tech that allows us to link to work colleagues and clients across the globe.

Managing customer relationships

The good news is that within every crisis there is an opportunity. Albert Einstein acknowledged this with the following statement:

“In the midst of every crisis, lies great opportunity.

While acknowledging the stresses of the current global pandemic, it’s equally important to find opportunities in the midst of the crisis.

Let’s take this statement to heart and consider a simple case study that describes how to use CRM software (appvizer dot com, client relationship), to bootstrap and grow your startup into a robust business.

You want a business that has the ability to weather current financial storms and come out on the other side as a healthy, thriving company.

What is CRM software?

In order to utilize the full functionality of a CRM application, let us consider a succinct definition: defines Customer Relationship Management (CRM) as an “approach to managing a company’s interaction with current and potential customers.â€

A CRM is an end-to-end customer management methodology that combines the analysis of the company’s customer sales history to forecast trends and improve customer relationships.

Its fundamental aim is to help the company retain customers and drive sales growth. For, as the quotation by Sam Walton highlighted above states, the customer is boss. And, without customers, the business cannot exist.

CRM Management: A case study

Now that we have an understanding of the primary function of customer management and the core role it plays in running a successful business, let’s consider our case study:

Let’s assume for a moment — you own an online content marketing business known as Firecrab Words. Although you are an experienced content writer and have worked as a freelancer for several years now, you’ve decided that now is the right time to register a company.

You are now going to position your brand to take advantage of the increase in the potential for digital marketing opportunities when the global economy reboots itself.

Let’s also suppose you have completed all the business development documentation. You’ve included the necessary financial and business process models. You have cobbled together a website. You know your website is not great — but it is functional. It will do for now.

The only thing left to do, apart from marketing, is to find a system to manage your clients. You have existing clients that you need to move onto the CRM application.

And, you need to analyze historical data to forecast trends and patterns to determine how to improve your customer management model.

Choosing a CRM

There are a number of different CRM software applications available for you to choose from with different features and benefits. Therefore, the first step is to decide what features you need to successfully manage your customers and potential customers to leverage long-term, consistent sales growth.

Also, because it’s highly likely that you will have to pay a monthly or annual subscription fee, it’s doubly important to ensure that you choose the right fit for your startup.

Once you have decided which features you need, the next step is to consult an online CRM review site like Appvizer that states the benefits of each software application, and it provides a comparison between the apps whose benefits are listed.

As an aside, I used Appvizer to choose a CRM application for my eCommerce business that sells handmade items like bed quilts, clothing made from West African fabric, as well as leather bags and wallets.

However — it’s worth looking at a review site to determine which CRM application is the best for your own business requirements. Be sure to ask around a little — don’t go with the first one. Get some recommendations from someone who has used the service.

CRM: The benefits described as statistics

One of the best ways to describe the benefits of an application is to look at the numbers. Thus, let’s consider the following statistics (financesonline dot com – crm stats analysis of trends).

  •  The CRM market currently has a value of $120 billion (USD).
  • Its annual growth is forecast at 12% per year reaching 82% billion in 2025.
  •  A CRM system that is implemented correctly can yield a Return on Investment (ROI) of circa 45% on every dollar invested.
  • 48% of sales teams rely heavily on their CRM software to manage their clients and improve business operations.
  •  The CRM business model or customer relationship management is considered the most important aspect of a company next to lead generation and engagement.

These are just a few of the numerous CRM-related statistics available for consumption. However, they describe the value of implementing a CRM system to manage your clients and grow your business.

Customer relationship management as it applies to the case study

By way of explaining the essential CRM functionality, let’s consider each function within the case study stated above.

Contact management

One of the stated aims in the case study described above is to formalize your content marketing business processes, including the onboarding of existing clients. Therefore, contact management is a vital part of a successful CRM system.

What is contact management?

Concisely stated, contact management is essentially the addition or recording of customer contact details into the CRM system. Secondly, this aspect of the CRM tracks the interactions between the customer and the business, including emails sent, phone calls made, and purchases made by the customer.

Apart from keeping track of client-business interactions, this module has the capacity to generate statistical data that allows the business to improve customer relations; thereby, increasing sales figures.

Therefore, when considered in relation to the Firecrab Words case study, you need to enter all of your current client data into the CRM system. If you have historical sales figures and a record of all customer interactions, it is probably a good idea to add them to the new system as well.

Otherwise, you can start tracking customer interactions from the time you have onboarded all your existing clients.

Sales team management

Contact management and sales team management are two sides of the same coin. Both need to be tracked and managed. Without a sales team — you will not have any customers and without customers, you won’t need to hire a sales team.

At this juncture, it is important to note that because Firecrab Words is a startup, you, as the business owner are also the sales team.

What are the sales team and customer opportunity management?

As stated above, the interactions between the sales team and the customers are measured. It also measures the opportunities that the sales team has to convert visitors to your business’s online presence into returning customers.

The process is also known as lead scoring, and it identifies the clients that are most likely to convert.

Final thoughts

The importance of maintaining positive customer relationships cannot be underestimated For, without customers, the business will not make money, and therefore, cannot exist.

Consequently, it is essential to ensure that you not only maintain good relationships with your clients, but you constantly work at improving them.

In this manner, your business will grow from a small startup to a robust, stable business, capable of weathering all storms.

Crisis versus Opportunity: 6 Ways to Bootstrap a Startup in a Post-COVID-19 World While Navigating the New Normal

crises opportunity

Are you considering starting up your own business? The reality is that the world as we know it has changed. And, no one really knows what the future holds. Consequently, it is understandable that people, especially those who have either had to take a pay cut or have been furloughed. Therefore, the biggest challenge, apart from not contracting the virus, is how to generate enough money to meet your monthly budget during these tough times.

“In the midst of every crisis, lies great opportunity. – Albert Einstein

As the quotation highlighted above by Albert Einstein states, “in the middle of every crisis, lies an opportunity. Thus, let’s start this discussion by defining the global crisis caused by the new coronavirus, COVID-19, so that we can look forward to finding the opportunity in the crisis.

Crisis versus opportunity: Setting the Scene

It is generally accepted that the novel coronavirus, COVID-19, was first seen in Wuhan, China, during the last days of 2019. This virus is a zoonotic virus. In other words, it was first seen in an animal like a bat, and it consequently jumped from an animal host to a human host. Once in its human host, COVID-19 mutated so that it could spread via person-to-person transmission.

As an aside, there are instances where it seems as though the virus has jumped back to an animal host in the form of pet dogs and cats. However, it is believed that this occurred because the pet’s owner was infected with the virus. And, this scenario is really nothing to worry about.

Four months later, since the first cases observed as a consequence of human-to-human transmission, the virus has swept across the globe, causing untold health and economic damage in its wake. Current worldwide statistics as of 10 May 2020, (from gisanddata.maps) show that there are over 10 million people infected with this virus and just over 503, 500 deaths. Unfortunately, these numbers seem to be increasing rapidly without an end in sight.

One of the many challenges facing the world’s governments is the fact that no one really knows how this virus behaves.

There has never been a viral outbreak of such magnitude before. Thus, the world’s scientists, medical experts, and governments are in new territory, determining what works and what doesn’t work as each country moves through the peaks and troughs of this pandemic.

There are, however, a few behaviors that the world’s scientists and medical experts have observed. The most important being that because this virus is spread via droplet infection from person to person, the best way of controlling and eradicating it is through social distancing or social isolation. In simple terms, people need to stay away from one another. Therefore, the world’s governments have issued varying degrees of lockdown or stay-at-home orders.

What this means is that the global economy has been paused while we wait for the virus to burn itself out.

Secondly, this virus is highly contagious and causes a respiratory illness similar to pneumonia, resulting in the death of people who fall in the high-risk category.

Thirdly, people can be asymptomatic carriers. In other words, they are infected with the virus but have no symptoms, so they spread the virus to other people without knowing they are infected.

Consequently, this pandemic has had and continues to have a negative impact on a macro-economic and microeconomic level.

It has also affected people’s mental, emotional, and physical health.

Governor Cuomo, governor of New York State, USA, highlighted the quintessential issue with the coronavirus pandemic in his conversation with Howard Stern on 13 April 2020. He stated that not only are we fighting a virus, “but we’re also fighting emotions on an individual level, on a collective level. People are frightened, they’re anxious, they’re stressed.” This virus is unmatched. People are trapped at home, they are not getting a salary, and they are afraid to touch another person because no one knows who is and isn’t infected with the virus.

As stated above, the economic impact across the globe has been devastating. The US jobs report released on Friday 8 May 2020 showed that the US has hit a depression-era unemployment rate.

Additionally, the website stated that 26 million people in the US have lost their jobs since early March 2020. The fundamental difference between the US, EU, and the UK is that the EU and the UK governments are paying a percentage of their workers’ salaries and their jobs will be available once the respective country’s economies start up again.

Finding the opportunity amidst the crisis

Therefore, the questions that must be asked and answered are what is the new normal and how do you utilize the “new normal to earn an income? In summary, the biggest part of this answer is to find the opportunity in the crisis.

Most of this discussion up till this point has been about the crisis caused by the global pandemic. And, while the socioeconomic devastation must not be underestimated, the question that begs is, how do people find the opportunity within the crisis.

The first step in finding the opportunity within the crisis is to put measures into place to survive the crisis. The next step is to position yourself for economic sustainability ( — opportunity in adversity).

Following the government’s stay-at-home orders to the letter — practicing extreme social-distancing measures.

When you have to venture out to the shops, seek medical care, or to exercise once or twice daily — follow the guidelines. The guidelines are the way to survive this bizarre crisis. Together with these measures, it is vital to apply for any unemployment benefits that the government is offering.

Once you have implemented these measures, the next step is to start investigating ways to “position yourself for economic sustainability. In other words, you must start bootstrapping an online startup, because the future of the global business world is online.

The companies that have the greatest chance of surviving the global economic shutdown are the ones that have pivoted their business processes from the brick-and-mortar model to an online model. While it is true that this statement can be seen as a generalization, it is only relevant to companies that form part of the essential services industry. Otherwise, this statement is accurate for almost all of the other business organizations.

What is a startup?

Before we look at ways to bootstrap a startup, let’s consider a comprehensive definition of what a startup is. defines a “startup company (startup or startup) is an entrepreneurial venture which is typically a newly emerged, fast-growing business that aims to meet a marketplace need by developing a viable business model around an innovative product, service, process, or a platform.

Additionally, “a startup is usually a company designed to effectively develop and validate a scalable business model. Startups have high rates of failure, but the minority of successes include companies that have become large and influential.

Ways to bootstrap a startup

Most importantly, the phrase “bootstrapping a startup translates into “growing your business with little or no venture capital or outside investment. It means relying on your own savings and revenue to operate and expand.

It is worth noting that while this is challenging to achieve, it is incredibly rewarding to do so. It is also important to realize that, statistically speaking, most startups become operational without any venture capital or external funding sources. And, most startup owners are also solopreneurs.

Therefore, as a solopreneur (see: solopreneur institute dot com) let’s consider a case study as an example of the ways to get your startup up and running and into a profitable operation.

Let’s assume, for this article, that you are a part-time social media expert.

Consequently, you’ve decided to utilize this passion and expertise to collect and aggregate social media data from some of the popular social media platforms like Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Pinterest, CrunchBase, and LinkedIn.

Your data will be ordered and structured into information based on specific niches like engineering and construction, finance, technology, and business. The “raison d’etre” (the most important reason or the purpose for someone or something’s existence…) for your startup is to track consumer behavior based on their digital footprint, including likes and shares.

Partner with a professional business services company

A solopreneur is essentially an entrepreneur who does not hire any staff. All essential business services that are not part of the startup’s core function are usually subcontracted out. Thus, in our case study, the first step is to consult with a professional business services organization that specializes in company formation in Hungary to help you register a legal company.

Seek help from a mentor or advisor

The good news is that you are not the first solopreneur, nor will you be the last person to bootstrap a startup. Many experts in this field have developed tried and trusted methods and mechanisms to succeed at an entrepreneurial venture. And, they are often very willing to mentor or advise new entrepreneurs to ensure that they do not make the same mistakes and to ensure that their ventures are successful the first time around.

Draw up a budget

As highlighted above, the financial side of bootstrapping a business can be challenging. Thus, you must manage your available finances wisely. And, drawing up a budget that contains all of your fixed expenses, will help you keep a handle on your finances and assist in stripping out any non-essential costs.

Implement the “lean startup philosophy

Eric Ries, the founder of, states that the lean startup philosophy“provides a scientific approach to creating and managing startups and get the desired product to customers’ hands faster.â€

It is an agile principle, with an iterative method that gets a product or service to market without spending months or years in product development without consumer approval or disapproval. Product development also occurs in small iterations or changes. It starts with a base model and then evolves into the final edition or one that gains traction amongst its target audience.

It’s vital to be aware of the fact that agile iterations are not random and haphazard. They are based on a combination of customer feedback and the startup’s core mission and aim.

Invest in your brand

Brand development is one of the most significant aspects of running a successful business. Your brand is what attracts your target audience and helps convert them into returning customers. One of the most challenging things for any company, irrespective of whether it is an established business or a startup, is to convert consumers into loyal, returning customers. Consequently, it is essential not to skimp on brand development, for your brand is your startup’s voice.

The good news is that, in the digital world, brand development does not have to cost an insane amount of money. The essential starting point is a good website that is usable and user-friendly, for this is where visitors to your site will answer the site’s Call-To-Action and convert.

Attract customers through content marketing

The Content Marketing Institute defines content marketing as the“strategic marketing approach focused on creating and distributing valuable, relevant, and consistent content to attract and retain a clearly-defined audience – and, ultimately, to drive profitable customer action.â€

The following statistics show the value that brand marketers place on content marketing:
  •  42% of brand marketers report that their content marketing efforts are successful.
  •  60% of all marketers create or contract a content writer to create at least one article per day.
  •  Year-on-year growth metrics in unique site traffic is 7.8 times higher for content market leaders than it is for followers. Therefore, it is vital to becoming a content marketing leader, not a follower.

By way of an example, guest post blogging — see my blog — My blog has some useful marketing strategies –that are designed to drive unique, authoritative traffic to the brand’s website.

Your new increase in authority is one of the most highly rated signals that Google uses when ranking and indexing websites on the Search Engine Results Page (SERP). Therefore, when a consumer searches for the products and services that you offer, Google will return your brand’s website in the top three to five results on the SERP.

Final thoughts

One of the most challenging aspects of the post-COVID-19 world is that no one really knows what it will look like. There are several givens regarding the way forward. The global economy has simultaneously come to a halt. And no one is quite sure how and when the global corporate world will reopen for business.

As Aswath Damodaran noted, in his YouTube chat with Noah Kagan titled, “NYU Finance Professor Explains This Financial Crisis, the world has never been in this situation, so no one knows how easily the global economy will reboot.

We will just have to wait and see what happens. Please don’t take the uncertainty as an excuse to sit back and do nothing.

The takeaway phrase here should be “Carpe Diem” or “Seize the Day” and make the most of the opportunities found within the current crisis.
